Travelling with a Cereal Allergy
Navigating the world of cereal allergies can feel a bit like being a detective on a culinary adventure, especially when dealing with common culprits like wheat, rye, barley, and oats. These grains pop up everywhere—not just in the usual suspects like bread and pasta, but also in stealthier spots like baking powder, batter, breadcrumbs, cakes, couscous, certain meat products, and pastries. When traveling to Bali—or anywhere else, for that matter—it's essential to keep a keen eye on potential allergens.
Be careful to watch out for the following foods when eating in Bali:
Indonesian Cooking: Traditional market snacks (jajanan pasar), snack bars, puddings, noodles, Indonesian thick pancakes (Martabak manis/Terang Bulan).
Ingredients commonly used across various cuisines include: baked goods, baking mixes, bread, cereals, chocolate, condiments, crackers, pasta, pastries, sauces, and snack bars. You'll also find bouillon cubes, broths, stocks, certain blue or veined cheeses, chewing gum, chips, fries, ground spices, lagers, stouts, IPAs, mayonnaise, mustard, pre-made pasta sauces, roasted nuts, salad dressings, salt and vinegar crisps, and vodka.
