Travelling with a Sulphur Dioxide (Sulphites) Allergy
Sulphur dioxide, or sulphites, is commonly used as a preservative in various foods and drinks to prevent discolouration and bacterial growth. However, it is not typically featured in traditional Balinese or Indonesian cuisine. Sulphites are more prevalent in processed or packaged foods, especially those that undergo fermentation or preservation processes. Nevertheless, in some commercially or industrially produced Indonesian foods or drinks, sulphur dioxide may be used as a preservative.
Be careful to watch out for the following foods when eating in Bali:
Popular foods containing Sulphur Dioxide (Sulphates): Beer, bottled lemon juice and lime juice, cider, condiments (bottled sauces etc.), dehydrated, pre-cut or peeled potatoes, dried fruit eg dried apricots, prunes, raisins etc, fresh or frozen prawns, grape juice, guacamole, maraschino cherries, pickled foods, some processed meat products, some soft drinks, tinned coconut milk, vegetable juices, vinegar, wine
