Travelling with a Tree Nut Allergy
Tree nuts aren't as prevalent in traditional Balinese or Indonesian cuisine as peanuts, but they are still present in some dishes, with almonds and cashews being the most commonly used. It's important to note that while 'candlenuts' are used frequently in traditional dishes like Rendang, they are not the same as typical tree nuts. However, because candlenuts are a type of nut, they should be avoided by those with nut allergies or dietary restrictions. Always consult with your doctor before traveling to discuss any specific food concerns.
Be careful to watch out for the following foods when eating in Bali:
Popular Indonesian Cooking: Kung Pao Chicken, Snow Cookies (Kue Putri Salju), Spicy Nut Sauce (Sambal Kacang), Almond Milk (Susu Almond), Almond Crispy Biscuit.
Ingredients found in other types of cuisines: Artificial flavorings, baked goods, barbecue sauce, chocolate spread, chocolates, crackers, desserts, mortadella, natural flavorings, nougat, pesto, salad dressings.

Here are some useful phrases to help you to communicate your Nut allergy to hospitality staff in Bali:
I have a severe allergy to all Tree Nuts and all foods containing all Tree Nuts.
"Saya memiliki alergi parah terhadap Kacang Pohon dan semua makanan yang mengandung Kacang Pohon."
I must avoid eating all Tree Nuts to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction.
"Saya harus menghindari makan Kacang Pohon untuk mencegah reaksi alergi yang mengancam jiwa."
Please make sure that my meal does not contain any Tree Nuts.
