Say Hi
Having a food allergy can be quite the adventure, especially for someone like me with a severe nut allergy, jet-setting from the UK to far-flung destinations. How can I ensure my food is allergen-free? What if I accidentally consume nuts? And how can I convey the severity of a food allergy to the folks at a restaurant without getting lost in translation? The language barrier was my biggest fear when first visiting Indonesia, despite already surviving India and China....
Well, fast forward to present day, and I am in the advantageous position of having faced those initial fears and have lived in Bali for the past half-decade, with my beautiful Sundanese wife, Nadya. Together, we've cracked the code on which places take allergies seriously (and which ones don't), and we've mastered the art of allergy communication.
Enter Wander No Worries: Your ultimate guide to navigating the culinary scene in Bali - without a fear mongering meltdown. I established this website to provide the very resources I wished I had when I first landed on the Island of the Gods. So, whether you're prepping for your Bali getaway or are already sipping coconuts on the beach, we've got you.
Dive in and let's make your travels that much safer.
And, if you're already in Bali, scroll on down for some insider tips from a real-life Indonesian! Meet Nadya…
I was born and bred in Indonesia and have been lucky enough to call Bali my home for the past 8 years. Until I met Eddie 5 years ago, I had never acknowledged the severity of food allergies, mainly because they are very rare here in Indonesia. Folks often confuse "allergy" with a simple dislike here, which as you can imagine can be a recipe for disaster.
However, I am thrilled to help Eddie on his quest to spread allergy awareness throughout Bali. I recall the fear and panic we both felt when he was accidentally fed nuts on his 30th birthday here in Bali. Not fun at all. I wouldn't wish this on anyone traveling here, or anywhere else for that matter, but find myself in the fortunate position to help do something about it. We're determined to spare others from that ordeal...
Our mission? To make Bali a haven for allergy-conscious travellers! We're chatting up all of the hot spots; restaurants, bars, cafes, you name it - to get them clued in on the whole allergen menu concept; as typically seen (and enforced by law) in Europe, Australia and North America. Because hey, everyone deserves to savour Bali's delights without the worry of a reaction. It’s too good here not to visit!
So, if you're already soaking up the Balinese vibes and need some allergy-friendly nourishment, or you're planning your vacation (sorry Eddie, I meant to say 'holiday'), we've got the lowdown on where to chow down.
*Oh, and "Selamat Datang" means "welcome," in Indonesian in case you were wondering!
